Hans Baldung Grien: Sacred | Profane

Karlsruhe, Staatliche Kunsthalle
30 November 2019 – 8 March 2020

The Klesch Collection was honoured to lend its The Holy Family with Five Angels by Hans Baldung Grien to the exhibition ‘Hans Baldung Grien. Heilig/Unheilig’, a long overdue retrospective on this most innovative artist from the 16th century, curated by Dr. Holger Jacob-Friesen.

Sixty years after the 1959 retrospective on Hans Baldung Grien, the 2019 exhibition provided the perfect opportunity to rediscover the artist, tracing the evolution of his style through a chronological overview of his work. The impressive group of 200 intercontinental loans which included works by his master Albrecht Dürer and contemporary Lucas Cranach the Elder, demonstrated Baldung’s significance in the German Renaissance and that his highly expressive paintings, virtuoso drawings and powerful woodcuts remain enchanting to this day. The Holy Family with Five Angels is a beautiful early example of Baldung’s unique artistic language and innovative interpretations which he would develop over the course of his substantial career.
